1. For His Pleasure

This school year ( and hopefully for years to come) we have been focusing on Giving God pleasure.

Consider:

1.) Does your child ( or do you) understand that there is a greater plan than his ( or yours)?

2.) Does your child being to understand the joy of surrender?

3.) Has your aim been to please God as you settle disputes and face dilemmas?

4.) Are you working on what it means to give God glory?  How does this affect the math lessons?

Rev. 4:11 “Thou are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power:  for thou hast created all things and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”

2. Whose Are We?

“The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof; the world and they that dwell therein.” Ps. 24:1

Realizing that God made us for Himself and that we are His. Helps in every area of home schooling.  We are not the author; He is.  We are not the potter; He is.  It’s so easy to get confused about who is in charge.

3. Discipline

Reminders that we need again and again.  Here we go again:

1.)    Give your child evidence that you delight in your assignment from God to train him.

2.)    Focus on what you want the child to become. NOT on how he disappoints you.

3.)    Continue to assume your training role as long as the child gives evidence of need.

4.)    Accept God’s gifts to you and your children.  The temperament and talent of each family member is on purpose!

4. Friends

What effort have you made to give healthy associations to your children?

At times your children may be obligated to associate with people who don’t seem to be growing in the Lord.  Most families and churches have such people.  Avoiding them may not be the best answer.  But you are free to develop friendships with people who do sincerely long for intimacy with God – people who thirst after righteousness and whose hearts do pant after God.

5. Tea Time

Soon it will be spring and we are reminded again of the beauty of God’s plan in every phase of His creation Right now I would like you to think of REFRESHMENT.

Fix a good cup of tea.  Put your feet up and look out your window.  List 5 things you can thank God for.

All of this to remind you that a great wife, mother and teacher will find time to rest.

6. Spelling

If your child is 4th grade or older and a poor speller consider working each of these ideas into your schedule.  A variety of methods may serve as the boost needed.

            Consider:

1)      A good spelling book.

2)      Computer aided review

3)      A spelling log for words often misspelled.

4)      Games for remembering rules

5)      Flash cards w/ clues on back for words such as through/though their/there

7. Dictation

What are some reasons that we use dictation as a teaching method?

1)      To practice focus.  Children are prone to wander mentally.  Dictation can help sharpen focus.

2)      To review spelling, writing (penmanship) and language.  Specifically call sentences that include the words or grammatical construction that you want to check.

3)      To teach following directions.  As you dictate, give specific directions as: underline the word that rhymes with “ran.”

4)      To encourage thinking.  Dictate a bible Verse or famous quote.  Ask the child to tell you what it means.

5)      To show excellent examples of sentence construction.  Dictate from some best Christian literature.
