An acrostic poem is a poem made up of a topic word, and then words which begin with each letter of the topic word and relate to it. You have probably seen them framed. They are the easiest kind of poems to write because nothing has to rhyme! Here are instructions on how to do it, and once your done, send it to me, and I’ll put them all in next month. I can’t wait to see them!

1. Think up a topic word. It can be anything, but at first, use a short, simple one. I’m going to use “sun.”

2. Next, compile a list of words that remind you of the topic. When I think of the sun I think things like bright, cheery, up in the sky, and big. The longer the word, the more adjectives you will need, and the more adjectives you have, the easier it will be to write. You won’t have to use all of them.

3. Start putting it together, picking words from your list. If none of your words start with a letter in the topic word, you can use words like don’t, do, never, so, is, has, have, and others preceding your descriptive word.

So bright

Up in the sky

Never dreary

Once finished, you can dress it up on the computer or by hand and frame it. Make a cute one about a baby sister or brother, or a funny one about Monday or your math lesson. You can even use someone’s name, frame it and give it as a gift. Have fun!
