Devotion
In “Renewed Day By Day A Daily Devotional” by A.W. Tozer for Nov. 28th he states, “God in love and wisdom has given us in His Holy Spirit every gift and power and help that we need to serve Him. We do not have to look around for some other way!” He goes on to talk about the judgment seat of Christ when what we did for our glory will be worthless but what we did for God’s glory well be seen as eternal treasure. He further states, “He does all of His word on earth through humble and faithful believers beyond their own capacities.” I found these to be very encouraging words. I trust you did, too.
Championship
Reviewing: Championship Education, by its very definition, encourages you to help your child reach his full potential ~ full agreeing with God. Therefore any limitations that you see your child facing are handled with prayers and hope, rather than panic!
Reminders: Champions are: Polite; Interested in receiving correction and instruction; Seeking to build others (even siblings) up; Mindful of the value of time; Trust worthy. While you cannot “make” your child a champion you can: 1) Continuously evaluate your own life with championship in mind. 2) Offer opportunities to practice championship.
Resources Reviewed
For you new moms who may not have heard me remind of these resources I offer:
- Beautiful Feet www.bfbooks.com, 800-889-1978. All of you know that I do not endorse a particular curriculum. However, the beautiful feet catalog offers graded reading lists on a wide variety of topics, especially history and science.
- OMF (888-omf-book) is Overseas Mission Fellowship, Publishing in not their primary objective. However, they have some excellent resources for the whole family. Their resources show that God is real and is working today. They also have children’s books that usually grab any child’s attention. These children’s stories are reports of actual mission activities.
As always, share your impression of any of these resources.
Thinking Skills
In the Prufrock Press catalog, Famous People Puzzles is offered. This looked intriguing to me because it seems to combine mystery with academic opportunity. The student is asked to write a biographical sketch of one of the famous people. They write these sketches from the scraps of paper left by the famous people. Critical thinking seems to be required. If you use this or have used it, please let me know how you evaluate it.
Siblings
Haven’t you heard that your children fight now but they will be best friends when they are older? As God-fearing parent educators, let’s use the brother – sister fight as a training opportunity. At workshops I am trying to summarize Ken Saude’s book, “Peace Making for Families”. He suggests how to manage conflict in your home. (It deals with husband/wife relationships, too.)
He suggests three essentials in peacemakers:
- Humble confession
- Loving confrontation
- Genuine forgiveness
At future workshops we will be sharing the “how” of these. Did you know that some moms are meeting for an hour after lunch at workshops to informally share on such topics as this?
Research
Remember that learning the skills of research begin as soon as your child reads. We have the excellent resource “Writing a Research Paper” that I spoke of at the August Camp.
Regardless of the age of your reading child, you might want to get a copy of this resource. It will clarify what “older student” skills are needed to produce acceptable research reports. For example: Under the title “Where Do I Begin” the number one on the list is limit your topic. Knowing that this is a necessary step in success, you can begin practicing this in third grade.
Celebration
Hebrews 1:1-4 “God who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right had of the majesty on high, Having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.”
Rejoice for God’s plan is perfect and complete. Celebrate!
