Refreshed by the Word

By Becky Wyand

“Praise the Lord. Praise the lord, O my soul. I will praise the Lord all my life, I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.” Psalm 146:1-2

Picture yourself in the midst of multi-colored flowers, fountain flowing, birds chirping. Rest a moment. Delight yourself in just how personal your relationship is with your Savoir. Rejoice. Relax. Be refreshed.

Tips for Read Aloud

Excellent read aloud books can contribute to the teaching of research and thinking skills. Here are some specific suggestions:

The book I have chosen for my example is, The Gods Must Be Angry by Sheila Walsh Miller and Ian Murray, an OMF book.

Before reading:

*Look at the cover and practice drawing conclusion, as:

  • What could the title mean?
  • What does the picture show?

While reading:

  • Page 2: Find Thailand on a map
  • Research a few facts about its people and weather.
  • Page 5 and other parts of the book: Discuss what “warm, dusky air” might mean.
  • Page 12: discuss Brandi’s feelings and why?
  • Page 16: Discuss dad’s response and why?
  • Pg 17: Why do you think Brandi responded the way he did?
  • How did the story end?
  • What was the main factor leading to that specific ending?

After reading:

  • Discuss who the OMF publishers are.
  • Discuss whether you want to know more about their work.
  • Write a paragraph, essay or children’s story documenting your own journey to Christ.

Thinking!!

Learning to think biblically is a life-long training activity. Consider II Peter 3:1-2.

“Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.”

For Starters:

  1. Ask, “what ‘both of them’ has he written?’
  2. What are some “thoughts” that you may want to get from I&II Peter?
  3. What “words spoken in the past”?
  4. Do I need to change the way I think about everyday things. Such as fairness and generosity?

Championships

One of the ways to test how far you and your children are on the path to championship is to watch the opinion of excellence. If you are still hearing,

“Does this count?”

“Is this enough practice?”

“Do I have to?”

“That wasn’t my job!”

“Is this good enough?”

Then you know you must stop, regroup, define excellence and encourage one another.

As we continue to review championship though the next school year, prepare by observing your own needs through the summer. This is a good time to practice diligence, responsibility, and servanthood.
