Accept the Call God has Given
by Becky Wyand
Devotion
Devotions gives us time to pause and surrender again to the true God. To be “devoted to,” means to be loyal and faithful. In our home schooling we want to be faithful to:
i. Accept the call God has given
ii. Respond to that call with compassion and surrender
iii. Believe that our children are a gift from God
iv. Know that their gifts are learning styles are a part of that gift
v. Release each Child to Him for training.
Refresh
a. Isaiah 42: “I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.”
b. Isaiah 43:1-3A “But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, I Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.”
c. When thou passes through the waters, I will be with thee’ and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”
d. “For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Savior.”
Championship
a. Following up on our two
previous workshops, let me give you warnings:
i. You think “training,” therefore you are not annoyed at having to do continuous counseling.
ii. You do the 30 seconds to three minute counseling during your academic schedule, not instead of it.
iii. Your aim is higher and higher levels of achievement, not squeaking by.
iv. Skill development, chores, art, and music, appreciation, physical activity, and being a servant are all vital parts of each child’s curriculum.
Arguing
a. Remember the book, The Fallacy Detective. I’m still suggesting that those of you who live with someone who must prove his point, get this book and make it a part of your language study.
b. You will be required to take a look at how you prove points in your family as you journey with the authors, Nathaniel and Hans Bluedorn, through 36 lessons on how to recognize bad reasoning. I learned a lot!
Fast Learner
a. When everything you assign to your child is easy and quickly finished with a good attitude you may want to consider:
i. Adding projects and ways to use that material learned – rather then skipping ahead book after book.
ii. Planning new opportunities to explore with hands on experience as making bread to sell, or becoming a pilot!
iii. Giving opportunity to look at the needs of other and discovering how he could meet some of those needs.
iv. Studying the WORD to see how God plans to use his gifts and why God might have chosen him for this particular academic gift.
This Just Isn’t working
a. When faced with the thought, “This just isn’t working,” whether it’s a schedule, read aloud book, text method, or discipline, consider:
i. Does my plan or choice fit with the teachings of the Word of God? If it does then be very careful when you replace it to make it also fit with something that agrees with teachings of the WORD.
ii. If the WORD does not specifically speak on your issue, then examine your choice to see if you followed biblical principle.
iii. Realize that when you are following Biblical principle several answers may be “right” to the same dilemma.
iv. Before giving up on a book, schedule, method or discipline ask yourself, “Have I given this enough time or energy?” Usually more time helps the situation.
v. When thinking about changing texts ask, “Could this text be redeemed if I change my method?”
vi. When looking at failing discipline ask “Am I trying to take my child’s role?” Sometimes in discipline we are called to keep practicing what we know to be Biblically right, then let God change the heart of the Child.
Joy
Remember to do what you’re called to do with Joy! Joy because you know that you are following the perfect leader. Joy because you know that your God has a good plan for you and for your family. Joy because you have decided to follow His plan and you know how the game ends. Congratulations on your choice!
