The Precious Word

by Becky Wyand

What great news have you learned from the World recently? Did you share it with someone? Were you concerned if you didn’t get something enlightening from the Word?

For me one recent finding was while reading 1 Kings 8. Throughout this reading Solomon seems bent on prayer and praise to God. But in verse 60 he has just finished giving a blessing to the people (the temple is already built). He then says in 1 Kings 8:60 “that all the people of the earth may know that the Lord is God, and that there is NONE else.”

This made me realize that much of what God permits is our lives – the outstanding victories, the alarming defeats – are allowed “that all the people of the earth may know that the Lord is god, and that there is NONE else.”

In home schooling we have ample opportunity to be aware that we are being watched!

1. At a workshop recently I announced to you information about Vision Therapy Associates. I wanted everyone to have this information from Mr. Tom Hunsberger. They have a flyer, Educator’s Guide to Classroom Vision Problems, that may help you discover if your child would profit from their services. They can be reached at:

2. Another Note on Championship

Hard work is a virtue and one of the parts of Championship philosophy that I appreciate is its emphasis on individualizing instruction because of this emphasis everyone can be trained to do hard work and to continuously improve is that work.

Example: Your child and his friend are both the same age. One reads very well, and the other, not so well. For each they can be given 20 minutes to read silently and answer questions in writing. One would be reading at the 6th grade level, the other a the 2nd but the same level of excellence is attitude, writing, and comprehending would be required.

Delight in the Lord

One of the ways that you can delight in the Lord is to enjoy your children. Some hindrances that I see to enjoying them:

1)      Schedules full; pulling in many different direction and little rest.

2)      Panic. Panic over being ‘behind’ in work. Panic over your children not learning enough. Panic over the way your children respond to correction, chores, school work and other instruction.

3)      Failure to work on the husband – wife relationship, creating a strain that filters through to the children, causing a reaction in them that makes it difficult for you to enjoy them.

Discipline

I’ve been overjoyed recently in your testimonies of how the Lord is teaching you discipline. It certainly is much easier to teach something that you have learned!

A warning however:

Don’t jump to your disruptive or disobedient child’s rescue by blaming yourself when the disruption sky rockets. While you certainly may fail to be perfect in training your children, you want to teach them to be personally and individually responsible for their own actions (in spite of their circumstances)
